Ramallah, occupied Palestine - The number of Palestinian female political prisoners in the Israeli occupation’s prisons and military camps has risen to 90 women, amid escalating and systematic mass arrest campaigns, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society said on Wednesday.
This figure had previously been recorded at the peak of arrests in the occupied West Bank at the beginning of the genocide in Gaza, which also included targeting women in Gaza.
The PPS stated that the majority of the female prisoners are held in Damon Prison, among them two minors, a prisoner who is three months pregnant, 25 administrative detainees held without trial or charge, three journalists, as well as two prisoners suffering from cancer, and two who have been detained since before the genocide.
The PPS explained that female prisoners face harsh detention conditions, including starvation, deprivation, medical neglect, abuse, as well as solitary confinement and assaults, including the practice of strip searches.
Most arrests against women are carried out under the pretext of “incitement.” There have been over 700 cases of arrest by Israeli occupation forces since the genocide against women in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and within the 1948 territories, with no accurate statistics available for arrests in Gaza.
This escalation comes during one of the bloodiest periods for Palestinian women, amid ongoing serious violations, including physical and sexual assaults, and the detention of women as hostages to pressure their male family members to turn themselves in.
